I will do commissions in an atmosphere of cooperation with the client. That is, by understanding the purpose of the piece of work commissioned and the client’s expectations. I will consult with the client on a regular basis during the process if that’s what the client desires, or if I need more information (especially on a large piece).
I usually work from a few photographs. I prefer candid shots, taken by myself, if possible. I want to begin by knowing something of the person being painted, either first hand or referentially. I prefer to talk to the person and get to know something of their personality as well as how they would prefer to be represented. I need to know this preliminary background before I exercise my discretion as an artist to represent them on canvas.
